For this reason, systems of linear equations are among the absolutely essential topics that should be mastered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are 3 methods for solving linear systems of equations, all of which are equivalent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The addition method<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are 2 examples where the addition method is used:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/sciences-in-frankfurt.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Additionsverfahren_1_b-rotated-1-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sciences-in-frankfurt.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Additionsverfahren_1_b-rotated-1-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sciences-in-frankfurt.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Additionsverfahren_1_b-rotated-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/sciences-in-frankfurt.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Additionsverfahren_1_b-rotated-1-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/sciences-in-frankfurt.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Additionsverfahren_1_b-rotated-1-9x12.jpg 9w, https:\/\/sciences-in-frankfurt.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Additionsverfahren_1_b-rotated-1.jpg 1512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The aim of the addition method is to change one or both equations in such a way that by adding them, one variable is eliminated and the equation can be solved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is achieved by multiplying one or both equations by numbers (always both sides of the equation!) so that one variable can be reduced at the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the first example, we want to (arbitrarily) reduce the variable y. We therefore have to multiply equation no. 1 by 2 (so that -6y is created) and multiply equation no. 2 by 3 (so that +6y is created). Please note that both sides of such multiplications must always be multiplied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that equation no. 1 contains -6y and equation no. 2 contains +6y.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next step is to add the two equations together and we get an equation that contains only one variable, namely x. The equation is solved for x.
